Chapter 3 of 18 · 43 verses

The Way of Action

Arjuna asks why he should act at all if knowledge is higher. Krishna says no one can stay without acting even for a moment, so act well and without selfishness. Work done as service, without greed, frees the mind. Desire and anger are the real enemies.

arjuna uvācha
jyāyasī chet karmaṇas te matā buddhir janārdana
tat kiṁ karmaṇi ghore māṁ niyojayasi keśhava

Arjuna says: Krishna, if you think knowledge is better than action, why do you urge me to do this terrible action?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna speaks to Krishna, and he is confused. He has heard that wisdom is better than action, so why is Krishna asking him to fight? The point is that it is fine to ask openly when advice seems to pull two ways. If two people advise you differently about a job, ask them plainly.

vyāmiśhreṇeva vākyena buddhiṁ mohayasīva me
tad ekaṁ vada niśhchitya yena śhreyo ’ham āpnuyām

Your mixed-sounding words seem to confuse my mind. Tell me one thing clearly, by which I may reach the highest good.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna tells Krishna that his words sound mixed and have left his mind in a muddle. He asks for one clear answer, not two. When you are stuck, ask for one clear next step. For example, if a task feels too big, ask your teacher or boss, what is the first thing I should do?

śhrī bhagavān uvācha
loke’smin dvi-vidhā niṣhṭhā purā proktā mayānagha
jñāna-yogena sāṅkhyānāṁ karma-yogena yoginām

The Blessed Lord says: Sinless one, I taught two paths in this world long ago: the path of knowledge for the thinkers, and the path of action for the doers.

What Krishna meant

Now Krishna begins to answer Arjuna. He says there have always been two paths: thinkers follow the path of knowledge, and doers follow the path of action. Both are real. In life this means people are different. One friend learns best by reading and thinking, another by doing, and both can grow well.

na karmaṇām anārambhān naiṣhkarmyaṁ puruṣho ’śhnute
na cha sannyasanād eva siddhiṁ samadhigachchhati

A person does not reach freedom from action by simply not starting any action, nor does one reach perfection by merely giving up work.

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that just sitting still and not starting any work does not make a person free, and quitting work does not make anyone perfect. Freedom comes from how you act, not from escaping. If you avoid a hard chore at home hoping the worry will vanish, it usually stays until you do it.

na hi kaśhchit kṣhaṇam api jātu tiṣhṭhatyakarma-kṛit
kāryate hyavaśhaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛiti-jair guṇaiḥ

No one can stay even for a moment without doing something, since everyone is made to act by the qualities of nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says no one can stay without doing something even for a moment, because our own nature keeps us moving. We are always thinking, breathing or choosing. So the real question is not whether to act, but how. Even on a lazy Sunday you act, so you might as well choose something kind or useful.

karmendriyāṇi sanyamya ya āste manasā smaran
indriyārthān vimūḍhātmā mithyāchāraḥ sa uchyate

One who holds back the organs of action but keeps thinking of sense objects in the mind is called a pretender.

What Krishna meant

Krishna warns about pretending. Someone may sit quietly with hands and body still, but if the mind keeps running after desires, they are only putting on a show. Being honest with yourself matters more than looking calm. If you smile at a meeting but boil inside, the real work is to settle the inside.

yas tvindriyāṇi manasā niyamyārabhate ’rjuna
karmendriyaiḥ karma-yogam asaktaḥ sa viśhiṣhyate

But one who controls the senses with the mind and, free from attachment, takes up the path of action, is better.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the better person is the one who steadies the senses with the mind and then gets on with useful work, without clinging to the outcome. Self-control does not mean stopping life, it means guiding it. For example, you put the phone away, and then you actually study or cook with full attention.

niyataṁ kuru karma tvaṁ karma jyāyo hyakarmaṇaḥ
śharīra-yātrāpi cha te na prasiddhyed akarmaṇaḥ

Do your assigned work, for action is better than inaction. Even the upkeep of your body would not be possible without action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna to do the work that is his to do, because action is better than doing nothing. Even keeping the body going needs effort. The idea is simple: take up your own responsibility. If the dishes, homework or a report are yours, doing them steadily beats worrying about them.

yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ
tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samāchara

The world is bound by action, except action done as a service. So do your work for that, free from attachment.

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that work done only for ourselves can tie us up in worry, but work done as a service to others, or to something bigger, feels lighter. So do your work for that purpose and let go of clinging. A shopkeeper who really wants to serve customers worries less about every small gain.

saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛiṣhṭvā purovācha prajāpatiḥ
anena prasaviṣhyadhvam eṣha vo ’stviṣhṭa-kāma-dhuk

At the beginning of creation, the creator made beings along with service and said: grow by this, let it give you what you need.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes an old story: when the world began, the creator joined people with the idea of giving, and said that by giving, they would grow and get what they need. Life works through give and take. In a family, when everyone shares chores, everyone has more time and peace.

devān bhāvayatānena te devā bhāvayantu vaḥ
parasparaṁ bhāvayantaḥ śhreyaḥ param avāpsyatha

Honour the gods with this, and let the gods help you. By helping one another you will reach the highest good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when people respect the higher forces of life and help one another, everyone does well together. Nobody rises alone. Think of a neighbourhood where people look out for each other: when one family has trouble, the others step in, and the whole street feels safer.

iṣhṭān bhogān hi vo devā dāsyante yajña-bhāvitāḥ
tair dattān apradāyaibhyo yo bhuṅkte stena eva saḥ

Nourished by service, the gods will give you the things you want. One who enjoys their gifts without giving anything back is a thief.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that life keeps giving us what we need, so it is only fair to give something back. One who takes everything and gives nothing is like a thief. This is a gentle reminder to share. If you enjoy your office, home or town, do some small thing to look after it.

yajña-śhiṣhṭāśhinaḥ santo muchyante sarva-kilbiṣhaiḥ
bhuñjate te tvaghaṁ pāpā ye pachantyātma-kāraṇāt

Good people who eat what remains after sharing are freed from all sins. Those who cook only for themselves eat sin.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says good people eat after sharing, and this keeps their hearts clean and light. Those who gather things only for themselves carry a heavy feeling. A simple example is cooking a little extra and offering some to a neighbour or a hungry person before you sit down to eat.

annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ
yajñād bhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ

Beings come from food, food from rain, rain from service, and service from action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna shows a chain that connects everything: we live on food, food grows from rain, rain comes through nature working together, and all of it depends on action. Nothing stands alone. When you waste water or food, remember that many hands and many forces made it reach you.

karma brahmodbhavaṁ viddhi brahmākṣhara-samudbhavam
tasmāt sarva-gataṁ brahma nityaṁ yajñe pratiṣhṭhitam

Know that action comes from the Veda, and the Veda from the Imperishable. So the all-pervading Supreme is always present in service.

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that good action comes from wisdom handed down through the sacred texts, and that wisdom comes from the highest truth itself. So the Supreme is present wherever we work as a service. You can feel this when you do your job honestly and sense it is part of something larger than you.

evaṁ pravartitaṁ chakraṁ nānuvartayatīha yaḥ
aghāyur indriyārāmo moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati

One who does not follow this wheel set in motion here, lives a sinful, sense-driven and useless life, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that a person who ignores this cycle of giving and receiving, and lives only for pleasure, is living a wasted life. It is said kindly, as a nudge. For example, someone who only scrolls and snacks all day may feel empty, while a little useful effort brings real satisfaction.

yas tvātma-ratir eva syād ātma-tṛiptaśh cha mānavaḥ
ātmanyeva cha santuṣhṭas tasya kāryaṁ na vidyate

But the person who delights in the self, is content in the self and satisfied in the self has no duty left to do.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says there is one kind of person who needs no duty: someone who is happy within, content with the Self, and satisfied inside. Their joy does not depend on outside things. Think of the peace you feel after a quiet walk, when you want nothing at all for a moment.

naiva tasya kṛitenārtho nākṛiteneha kaśhchana
na chāsya sarva-bhūteṣhu kaśhchid artha-vyapāśhrayaḥ

Such a person has nothing to gain by acting and nothing to lose by not acting, and depends on no one for any purpose.

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that such a person gains nothing by acting and loses nothing by not acting, and does not lean on anyone for happiness. This is a very high state. For us the lesson is smaller: the less your peace depends on praise or approval, the freer you feel at work.

tasmād asaktaḥ satataṁ kāryaṁ karma samāchara
asakto hyācharan karma param āpnoti pūruṣhaḥ

So, always do your duty without attachment. By working without attachment, a person reaches the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna sums up for Arjuna: always do what needs doing, without clinging to the result. By working this way a person grows toward the highest. The practice is simple: give your best to the task and let go of the need to win. A student can study fully and then accept the result calmly.

karmaṇaiva hi sansiddhim āsthitā janakādayaḥ
loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśhyan kartum arhasi

King Janaka and others reached perfection through action alone. Keeping in view the welfare of the world, you too should act.

What Krishna meant

Krishna reminds Arjuna that great people like King Janaka became wise through action itself, not by running away from it. He asks Arjuna to act for the good of everyone. A teacher or parent who keeps doing daily duties with care can grow wise right there, without leaving home.

yad yad ācharati śhreṣhṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ
sa yat pramāṇaṁ kurute lokas tad anuvartate

Whatever a great person does, others follow. Whatever standard they set, the world follows.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that ordinary people copy whatever respected people do, and the standard they set becomes the standard for others. So your behaviour teaches more than your words. A parent who speaks politely when tired shows children how to treat others far better than a lecture would.

na me pārthāsti kartavyaṁ triṣhu lokeṣhu kiñchana
nānavāptam avāptavyaṁ varta eva cha karmaṇi

Arjuna, I have no duty in the three worlds and nothing left to gain, yet I keep acting.

What Krishna meant

Krishna speaks about himself now. He says he has no duty and nothing left to gain in all the worlds, and still he keeps working. This shows that good work does not need a reward. Think of a mother cooking every day: she does it from love, not because she gets paid.

yadi hyahaṁ na varteyaṁ jātu karmaṇyatandritaḥ
mama vartmānuvartante manuṣhyāḥ pārtha sarvaśhaḥ

If I ever did not tirelessly keep working, people would follow my path in every way.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that if he ever stopped working tirelessly, people would follow his example and stop too. Leaders carry this weight, because others watch them. A manager who comes on time and finishes tasks calmly makes the whole team more steady than one who only gives orders.

utsīdeyur ime lokā na kuryāṁ karma ched aham
sankarasya cha kartā syām upahanyām imāḥ prajāḥ

If I did not act, these worlds would fall into ruin, and I would cause confusion and harm to these people.

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that if he stopped acting, the world would fall into disorder and people would be harmed. Work keeps things running. When even one person at home or school stops doing their part, others feel it. So your small steady effort matters more than you may think.

saktāḥ karmaṇyavidvānso yathā kurvanti bhārata
kuryād vidvāns tathāsaktaśh chikīrṣhur loka-saṅgraham

As the unwise act with attachment, so the wise should act without attachment, wishing the good of the world.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says unwise people work hard because they are attached to results, and the wise should work just as hard but without clinging, wishing the world well. Care about the job, not the credit. For example, help organise a family event fully, and do not keep score of who thanked you.

na buddhi-bhedaṁ janayed ajñānāṁ karma-saṅginām
joṣhayet sarva-karmāṇi vidvān yuktaḥ samācharan

The wise should not unsettle the minds of the unwise who are attached to action. Instead, doing all work well themselves, they should encourage others.

What Krishna meant

Krishna advises the wise not to shake the beliefs of people who are still attached to their work. Instead, they should do their own work well and gently encourage others. If a coworker works in a different style, show a better way by example, not by making them feel small.

prakṛiteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśhaḥ
ahankāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate

All actions are done by the qualities of nature. But a person confused by ego thinks, I am the doer.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that all actions happen through nature's workings, but a mind clouded by ego thinks, I alone am the doer. Remember how many things helped you succeed. After a good result in an exam or job, thank your teachers, family and luck too, and stay humble.

tattva-vit tu mahā-bāho guṇa-karma-vibhāgayoḥ
guṇā guṇeṣhu vartanta iti matvā na sajjate

But one who knows the truth about the qualities and actions, mighty-armed, knows that qualities act upon qualities and is not attached.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the person who understands how nature's forces and actions really work sees that forces simply act upon forces, and so does not cling. When you are tired and snap at someone, notice that hunger or tiredness is speaking, not the real you, and let it pass.

prakṛiter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ sajjante guṇa-karmasu
tān akṛitsna-vido mandān kṛitsna-vin na vichālayet

Those confused by the qualities of nature are attached to their actions. The one who knows the whole should not disturb these slow-minded ones who know only a part.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says people who are confused by nature's qualities stay attached to their actions, and those who see the bigger picture should not disturb them. Be patient with those who understand less. For example, when a child does not yet follow a lesson, explain kindly instead of mocking.

mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi sannyasyādhyātma-chetasā
nirāśhīr nirmamo bhūtvā yudhyasva vigata-jvaraḥ

Offer all your actions to me with your mind on the self, free from hope and the sense of 'mine', and fight without worry.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives Arjuna a clear instruction: offer every action to him with the mind turned inward, drop hope and the feeling of mine, and fight without worry. It is about handing over the burden. Before a hard task, say a short prayer, do your part fully, and let go of the fear.

ye me matam idaṁ nityam anutiṣhṭhanti mānavāḥ
śhraddhāvanto ’nasūyanto muchyante te ’pi karmabhiḥ

Those who always follow this teaching of mine with faith and without finding fault are also freed from the bondage of action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says those who follow this teaching with faith, and without picking at it, also grow free from the knots of action. Trust helps learning. Try a new habit sincerely for a few weeks, such as a calm morning routine, before deciding whether it works for you.

ye tvetad abhyasūyanto nānutiṣhṭhanti me matam
sarva-jñāna-vimūḍhāns tān viddhi naṣhṭān achetasaḥ

But those who find fault with this teaching and do not follow it, know them to be confused in all knowledge, lost and without understanding.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those who sneer at this teaching and refuse to follow it stay confused and lose their way. He is not scolding but warning about closed minds. If you decide in advance that a new idea is nonsense, you lose the chance to learn something useful from it.

sadṛiśhaṁ cheṣhṭate svasyāḥ prakṛiter jñānavān api
prakṛitiṁ yānti bhūtāni nigrahaḥ kiṁ kariṣhyati

Even the wise act according to their own nature. All beings follow their nature. What can restraint do?

What Krishna meant

Krishna means that even wise people act according to their own nature, and every being follows its nature, so forcing yourself to be someone else rarely works. Know your habits honestly. If you are a night owl, plan your hard tasks for your best hours instead of fighting yourself.

indriyasyendriyasyārthe rāga-dveṣhau vyavasthitau
tayor na vaśham āgachchhet tau hyasya paripanthinau

Liking and disliking are rooted in each sense and its object. One should not come under their power, for they are one's enemies on the path.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that liking and disliking sit waiting in every sense, and we should not fall under their control because they block our way. Notice them. If you dislike a task, feel the dislike, but still do it, and do not skip a good habit just because you like the sweets more.

śhreyān swa-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣhṭhitāt
swa-dharme nidhanaṁ śhreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ

One's own duty, even done imperfectly, is better than another's duty done well. It is better to die in one's own duty, since another's duty brings danger.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says your own duty, even if done imperfectly, is better than someone else's duty done well, because another path can lead you astray. Do not compare yourself too much. A shy student who keeps practising their own subject will grow more than one who copies a friend's career.

arjuna uvācha
atha kena prayukto ’yaṁ pāpaṁ charati pūruṣhaḥ
anichchhann api vārṣhṇeya balād iva niyojitaḥ

Arjuna asks: Krishna, what drives a person to do wrong, even unwillingly, as if forced?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna a very human question: why do people do wrong even when they do not want to, as if something is pushing them? We all know this feeling, like saying a harsh word, or eating too much, and regretting it right after. Asking honestly is the first step to understanding.

śhrī bhagavān uvācha
kāma eṣha krodha eṣha rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ
mahāśhano mahā-pāpmā viddhyenam iha vairiṇam

The Blessed Lord says: It is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of passion. It is all-consuming and very sinful. Know it as the enemy here.

What Krishna meant

Krishna answers that the pusher is desire, and anger that grows from it. It is hungry and never satisfied, and it harms us. Name it as the real enemy, not other people. When you feel angry, ask yourself, what did I want that I did not get? That question calms the heat.

dhūmenāvriyate vahnir yathādarśho malena cha
yatholbenāvṛito garbhas tathā tenedam āvṛitam

As fire is covered by smoke, a mirror by dust, and an embryo by the womb, so this world is covered by it.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives three pictures: fire hidden by smoke, a mirror covered by dust, and a baby hidden in the womb. In the same way, desire covers our clear sight. Wipe the dust and the mirror shines again. Take a short pause before reacting, and your clear thinking comes back.

āvṛitaṁ jñānam etena jñānino nitya-vairiṇā
kāma-rūpeṇa kaunteya duṣhpūreṇānalena cha

Knowledge is covered by this constant enemy of the wise, in the form of desire, which can never be satisfied like a fire.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says wisdom is hidden by desire, which is like a fire that never has enough fuel. The more you feed it, the hungrier it gets. Think of buying one gadget after another: the happiness fades fast. Enough is a powerful word, and learning it brings calm.

indriyāṇi mano buddhir asyādhiṣhṭhānam uchyate
etair vimohayatyeṣha jñānam āvṛitya dehinam

The senses, the mind and the intellect are said to be its home. Through these it covers knowledge and confuses the embodied soul.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says desire makes its home in the senses, the mind and the intellect, and from there it clouds our understanding. Knowing where it hides helps. If you notice that late-night scrolling pulls you, remove the temptation, like charging the phone in another room.

tasmāt tvam indriyāṇyādau niyamya bharatarṣhabha
pāpmānaṁ prajahi hyenaṁ jñāna-vijñāna-nāśhanam

So, Arjuna, first control your senses, and then destroy this sinful destroyer of knowledge and wisdom.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna to first bring the senses under control, and then conquer this enemy that destroys wisdom. Start with the small things you can manage. For example, practise stopping at one cup of tea or ten minutes on a game. Each small win builds the strength for bigger ones.

indriyāṇi parāṇyāhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ
manasas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ

They say the senses are higher than the body, the mind higher than the senses, the intellect higher than the mind, and the self higher than the intellect.

What Krishna meant

Krishna lays out a ladder of strength: the senses are stronger than the body, the mind than the senses, the intellect than the mind, and the Self beyond them all. When you feel pulled by a craving, let your thinking mind guide you, instead of letting the pull decide.

evaṁ buddheḥ paraṁ buddhvā sanstabhyātmānam ātmanā
jahi śhatruṁ mahā-bāho kāma-rūpaṁ durāsadam

Knowing the self to be beyond the intellect, steady your mind by your own strength and conquer the hard-to-defeat enemy in the form of desire.

What Krishna meant

Krishna closes the chapter by telling Arjuna that the Self is beyond even the intellect, so steady your mind with your own inner strength and defeat the hard enemy called desire. You are stronger than your cravings. Before you give in, take three slow breaths and remember who is in charge.
