The Three Qualities

Everything in nature is made of three qualities: goodness (calm, clear), passion (restless, wanting) and darkness (dull, lazy). They keep changing in us. Krishna explains how to notice them and how to rise above them by staying steady and not being tossed around by moods.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that people who rely on this knowledge become like him, and are not shaken even when the world is created or dissolved. Krishna means that real understanding gives deep steadiness. When news or events upset everyone around you, stay calm and think clearly.

mama yonir mahad brahma tasmin garbhaṁ dadhāmy aham
sambhavaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ tato bhavati bhārata

The great Prakriti is my womb. In it I place the seed. From that, all beings come into being, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says nature is like a womb in which he places the seed, and from this all beings are born. This is a picture of how life begins from nature together with the divine. Treat nature, food and the earth with thanks, for everything we have comes from it.

14.4

Whatever forms are born in any womb, Arjuna, the great Prakriti is their womb, and I am the father who gives the seed.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says whatever forms are born, in any kind of body, nature is their mother, and he is the father who gives the seed. Krishna means every living thing has the same source. Remember this when you meet animals, strangers or people very different from you, and be kind.

sattvaṁ rajas tama iti guṇāḥ prakṛiti-sambhavāḥ

Goodness, passion and darkness are the three qualities born of nature. They bind the eternal soul to the body, mighty-armed.

What Krishna meant

Krishna names the three qualities born of nature: goodness, passion and darkness. They tie the soul to the body. Think of them as three moods that run through us: calm clarity, restless drive and dull heaviness. Noticing which mood you are in right now is a good first step.

tatra sattvaṁ nirmalatvāt prakāśhakam anāmayam
sukha-saṅgena badhnāti jñāna-saṅgena chānagha

Of these, goodness is pure, bright and free from sickness. But it binds by attachment to happiness and to knowledge, sinless one.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says goodness is pure, bright and free from trouble, yet it also ties us by attachment to happiness and knowledge. Even good things can trap us. For example, someone who is proud of how much they know may stop listening. Enjoy being calm and wise, but stay humble.

rajo rāgātmakaṁ viddhi tṛiṣhṇā-saṅga-samudbhavam
tan nibadhnāti kaunteya karma-saṅgena dehinam

Know that passion is made of desire. It comes from craving and attachment, and it binds the soul by attachment to action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says passion is born of desire and craving, and it binds us through attachment to action. This is the restless energy that makes us chase one more goal. A useful habit is to ask, "Do I need this, or do I just want to keep running?"

tamas tv ajñāna-jaṁ viddhi mohanaṁ sarva-dehinām
pramādālasya-nidrābhis tan nibadhnāti bhārata

Know that darkness is born of ignorance and confuses all beings. It binds through carelessness, laziness and too much sleep.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says darkness is born of ignorance and confuses everyone. It binds through carelessness, laziness and too much sleep. Krishna means heavy, foggy states that keep us from our duties. If you feel dull, a short walk, a glass of water and one small task can lift the fog.

sattvaṁ sukhe sañjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata
jñānam āvṛitya tu tamaḥ pramāde sañjayaty uta

Goodness ties one to happiness, passion to action, and darkness covers knowledge and ties one to carelessness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna sums up the three qualities: goodness ties us to happiness, passion ties us to action, and darkness covers knowledge and ties us to carelessness. Each one holds us in its own way. Ask yourself today which one is holding you, and take one small step toward calm.

rajas tamaśh chābhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata
rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaśh chaiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajas tathā

Sometimes goodness rises by overcoming passion and darkness. Sometimes passion rises, and sometimes darkness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that sometimes goodness rises over passion and darkness, sometimes passion rises, and sometimes darkness. Our moods keep changing like weather. So do not be hard on yourself when you feel lazy or restless. Notice it, and gently help the calm mood grow again.

sarva-dvāreṣhu dehe ’smin prakāśha upajāyate
jñānaṁ yadā tadā vidyād vivṛiddhaṁ sattvam ity uta

When the light of understanding shines through every gate of the body, know that goodness has grown.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when the light of understanding shines through every gate of the body, goodness has grown. In simple words, when you feel clear, awake and alert in your senses and thoughts, that is the calm mood. Protect it with enough sleep, simple food and quiet time.

lobhaḥ pravṛittir ārambhaḥ karmaṇām aśhamaḥ spṛihā
rajasy etāni jāyante vivṛiddhe bharatarṣhabha

Greed, restless activity, starting many things, unrest and craving arise when passion grows.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when passion grows, greed, restless activity, starting many things, unrest and craving appear. Krishna means busy-ness is not always progress. If you have ten half-finished tasks and feel jumpy, finish one before you open the next.

aprakāśho ’pravṛittiśh cha pramādo moha eva cha
tamasy etāni jāyante vivṛiddhe kuru-nandana

Dullness, inactivity, carelessness and confusion arise when darkness grows.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when darkness grows, there is dullness, inactivity, carelessness and confusion. Krishna means it is normal to have heavy days, but not good to stay there. When you feel stuck, do the smallest possible action, like making your bed, to get moving again.

yadā sattve pravṛiddhe tu pralayaṁ yāti deha-bhṛit
tadottama-vidāṁ lokān amalān pratipadyate

If a person dies when goodness is strong, they reach the pure worlds of those who know the best.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person who leaves the world when goodness is strong goes to pure worlds. Krishna means a clear, calm life brings a good path. Do not worry about the afterlife in fear. Simply live today with clarity, honesty and kindness.

rajasi pralayaṁ gatvā karma-saṅgiṣhu jāyate
tathā pralīnas tamasi mūḍha-yoniṣhu jāyate

If one dies when passion is strong, one is born among people attached to action. If one dies in darkness, one is born in confused wombs.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the state of mind at the end of life shapes what comes next: passion leads to people caught up in action, and darkness to confused births. Krishna means habits build us. Little by little, small choices toward calm and care shape who we become.

The fruit of good action is said to be pure and of goodness. The fruit of passion is pain, and the fruit of darkness is ignorance.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says good action brings pure results, passion brings pain, and darkness brings ignorance. Think of it as cause and effect in your own mind. If you work calmly and kindly, you feel at peace. If you rush in greed, you feel tired and unhappy.

sattvāt sañjāyate jñānaṁ rajaso lobha eva cha

From goodness comes knowledge, from passion comes greed, and from darkness come carelessness, confusion and ignorance.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says knowledge comes from goodness, greed comes from passion, and carelessness, confusion and ignorance come from darkness. Krishna means your inner state shapes your thinking. Before an important decision, wait until you feel calm and rested, because clear thinking follows a clear mood.

14.18

jaghanya-guṇa-vṛitti-sthā adho gachchhanti tāmasāḥ

Those in goodness rise up, those in passion stay in the middle, and those in the lowest quality, darkness, go down.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says people in goodness rise, those in passion stay in the middle, and those in darkness sink down. Krishna means your habits move you up or down over time. Choose one small upward habit, like walking in the morning or reading something uplifting, and keep it.

nānyaṁ guṇebhyaḥ kartāraṁ yadā draṣhṭānupaśhyati
guṇebhyaśh cha paraṁ vetti mad-bhāvaṁ so ’dhigachchhati

When the seer sees no doer other than these qualities and knows what is beyond them, that person reaches my nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when a person sees that only the qualities are acting, and knows what lies beyond them, that person reaches his nature. Krishna means you are not your moods. When irritation rises, you can say, 'It is just a mood moving through me', and not act on it.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that by rising above these three qualities, the soul is freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow, and tastes lasting joy. Krishna means that you do not have to be pushed around by every mood. Even a little more calm each week brings real relief.

14.21

Arjuna asks: What are the signs of one who has gone beyond the three qualities? How does such a person behave, and how do they rise above them?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna: how can we recognise someone who has gone beyond the three qualities, how do they behave, and how do they get there? He wants a practical picture. We all like to know what a calm, wise person looks like, so we can learn from them.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
prakāśhaṁ cha pravṛittiṁ cha moham eva cha pāṇḍava

Krishna says: One who does not hate light, activity or confusion when they come, and does not long for them when they go,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins his answer. Such a person does not hate light, activity or confusion when they come, and does not long for them when they leave. Krishna means to accept moods as they are. When you feel lazy, do not scold yourself, and when you feel busy, do not cling to it.

who sits like someone unconcerned and is not disturbed by the qualities, knowing only that the qualities are working, and stays steady,

What Krishna meant

Krishna says such a person sits like a calm observer, not disturbed by the qualities, knowing only that the qualities are at work, and stays steady. Krishna means watching, not reacting. In a heated meeting, just notice the tension in the room and stay calm.

What Krishna meant

This verse is a list of signs: the same in pain and pleasure, settled in the Self, seeing a clod, stone and gold alike, and taking praise and blame the same. The one that helps most in life is steadiness under praise and blame. Do not let compliments or complaints decide your worth.

who is the same in honour and insult, the same to friend and enemy, and gives up all selfish starting of things, is said to have gone beyond the qualities.

What Krishna meant

This verse continues the list: the same in honour and insult, the same to friend and enemy, and not starting things out of selfish motives. Krishna says such a person has gone beyond the qualities. Treat everyone fairly, and act for good reasons, not just for your own gain.

māṁ cha yo ’vyabhichāreṇa bhakti-yogena sevate
sa guṇān samatītyaitān brahma-bhūyāya kalpate

One who serves me with unfailing devotion goes beyond these qualities and becomes fit to be one with Brahman.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that one who serves him with steady devotion goes beyond these three qualities and becomes fit to be one with the Highest. Krishna means that steady love and trust carry you past your moods. When you are low, return to the thing you trust and love.

brahmaṇo hi pratiṣhṭhāham amṛitasyāvyayasya cha
śhāśhvatasya cha dharmasya sukhasyaikāntikasya cha

For I am the home of Brahman, of the immortal and unchanging, of eternal dharma and of complete happiness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter by saying he is the home of the Highest, of the deathless, of lasting dharma and of complete happiness. Krishna means true peace and joy rest on something steady, not on things that come and go. Build your happiness on good values, not only on gadgets or praise.
