The Field and the Knower

Krishna calls the body and mind "the field" and the one who knows it "the knower." The knower is the Self, which watches but is not stained by what happens. He lists the qualities of true knowledge: humility, non-violence, patience, honesty and seeing the same Self in all beings.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna to explain a few big things: nature and the person, the field and the one who knows the field, and what real knowledge is. He is curious about who we really are. A good habit in life is asking honest questions about yourself.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
idaṁ śharīraṁ kaunteya kṣhetram ity abhidhīyate

Krishna says: This body, Arjuna, is called the field. One who knows it is called the knower of the field by those who understand.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says this body is called the field, and the one who knows it is the knower of the field. You are not only your body, you are the one aware of it. When you feel tired or ill, remember you are the one watching, which helps you stay calm.

kṣhetra-jñaṁ chāpi māṁ viddhi sarva-kṣhetreṣhu bhārata
kṣhetra-kṣhetrajñayor jñānaṁ yat taj jñānaṁ mataṁ mama

Know me also as the knower in all fields. Knowing both the field and its knower is what I call true knowledge.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that he too is the knower in every field, in every living being. Understanding both the field and its knower is true knowledge. Krishna means that the same awareness lives in everyone, so it is easier to treat others with respect.

Listen briefly to what the field is, what it is like, how it changes, where it comes from, and who the knower is and what power he has.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he will now explain briefly what the field is, what it is like, how it changes, where it comes from, and who the knower is. He asks Arjuna to listen. Good listening is a skill. Put your phone down when someone teaches you something important.

The sages have sung about this in many ways, in different hymns and in clear, reasoned verses.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says wise sages have sung about this truth in many ways, in hymns and in careful, reasoned verses. Krishna means this is not a new or private idea. When you face a hard question, it helps to learn from many wise people, not just one.

mahā-bhūtāny ahankāro buddhir avyaktam eva cha

The five great elements, ego, intellect, the unseen cause, the ten senses and the mind, and the five objects of the senses,

What Krishna meant

This is a list of what makes up the field: the five elements, ego, intellect, the senses, the mind and the objects of the senses. In short, our body and mind are made of changing parts. Notice that your thoughts come and go, so you need not obey every one.

ichchhā dveṣhaḥ sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ saṅghātaśh chetanā dhṛitiḥ

desire, hatred, pleasure, pain, the body as a whole, awareness and firmness: this, in brief, is the field with its changes.

What Krishna meant

This list adds feelings to the field: desire, hatred, pleasure, pain, and firmness. All of these are part of the changing body-mind. The useful lesson is that anger and desire come and go like weather. Wait a little before acting on a strong feeling.

13.8

Humility, not showing off, non-violence, patience, honesty, respect for the teacher, cleanliness, steadiness and self-control,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins a list of what true knowledge looks like in a person: humility, not showing off, non-violence, patience, honesty and self-control. The one that matters most day to day is humility. Be ready to say, "I may be wrong", and you will learn faster.

not being carried away by sense pleasures, no ego, and seeing clearly the pain and flaws in birth, death, old age and illness,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues: not being carried away by pleasures, no ego, and seeing clearly that birth, ageing, illness and death bring pain. This is a calm, honest view of life. Use it to stay balanced: enjoy sweets and comforts, but do not let them run your day.

13.10

not clinging to children, spouse, home and the like, and always keeping a balanced mind in good and bad events,

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists more signs of knowledge: not clinging too tightly to family and home, and keeping a balanced mind in good and bad events. Love your family fully, but do not collapse when things go wrong. A steady mind helps you support them better.

13.11

steady, undivided devotion to me, liking quiet places and not enjoying crowds,

What Krishna meant

Krishna adds steady, undivided devotion to him, and liking quiet places over crowds. Quiet time helps the mind settle. Give yourself even ten calm minutes a day, away from noise and screens, to listen to your own thoughts.

adhyātma-jñāna-nityatvaṁ tattva-jñānārtha-darśhanam
etaj jñānam iti proktam ajñānaṁ yad ato ’nyathā

always staying with knowledge of the Self and seeing the purpose of true knowledge: all this is called knowledge, and anything opposite is ignorance.

What Krishna meant

Krishna finishes the list: always staying close to knowledge of the Self and seeing the purpose of real knowledge. All this is called knowledge, and the opposite is ignorance. Krishna means that real knowledge shows in how you live. Let what you learn change how you act.

jñeyaṁ yat tat pravakṣhyāmi yaj jñātvāmṛitam aśhnute
anādi mat-paraṁ brahma na sat tan nāsad uchyate

I will tell you what is to be known, by knowing which one reaches immortality. It is the supreme Brahman, without beginning, which is neither called being nor non-being.

What Krishna meant

Krishna now says he will explain what is to be known, which leads to lasting peace. It is the highest Truth, with no beginning, beyond our usual words of "is" and "is not". Krishna means some things are bigger than words. Accept that you can feel a truth without fully explaining it.

sarvataḥ pāṇi-pādaṁ tat sarvato ’kṣhi-śhiro-mukham
sarvataḥ śhrutimal loke sarvam āvṛitya tiṣhṭhati

It has hands and feet everywhere, eyes, heads and mouths everywhere, and ears everywhere. It stays in the world, covering everything.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes the highest Truth as being everywhere, as if it has hands, feet, eyes and ears in every direction. It is present in everything. A simple use: treat every person and every place with care, because the same life is in all of them.

sarvendriya-guṇābhāsaṁ sarvendriya-vivarjitam
asaktaṁ sarva-bhṛich chaiva nirguṇaṁ guṇa-bhoktṛi cha

It seems to have the qualities of all the senses, yet it has none. It is unattached, yet supports all. It is beyond the three qualities, yet enjoys them.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the highest Truth seems to have the powers of all the senses, yet has none of them. It is unattached, yet holds everything up. This looks like a riddle, but the idea is that something can be fully involved and still free. Do your duties without being tied up in knots.

bahir antaśh cha bhūtānām acharaṁ charam eva cha
sūkṣhmatvāt tad avijñeyaṁ dūra-sthaṁ chāntike cha tat

It is outside and inside all beings, moving and unmoving. It is too subtle to be understood, and it is far away and also very near.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the highest Truth is inside and outside all beings, moving and still. It is too subtle to grasp easily, and it is both far and near. Krishna means it is closer than we think. In a stressful moment, remember that calm is already inside you.

avibhaktaṁ cha bhūteṣhu vibhaktam iva cha sthitam
bhūta-bhartṛi cha taj jñeyaṁ grasiṣhṇu prabhaviṣhṇu cha

It is undivided, yet seems divided among beings. It should be known as the one who supports beings, swallows them up and brings them forth.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the highest Truth is one and undivided, though it appears to be divided among many beings. It holds all beings up, and brings them forth and takes them back. The use for life: remember that people are different outside, but share the same heart inside. That softens conflict.

jyotiṣhām api taj jyotis tamasaḥ param uchyate
jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñāna-gamyaṁ hṛidi sarvasya viṣhṭhitam

It is called the light of all lights, beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the object of knowledge and the goal of knowledge, living in the heart of everyone.

What Krishna meant

Krishna calls the highest Truth the light of all lights, beyond darkness. It is knowledge itself and lives in everyone's heart. Krishna means we can find clarity inside. When you feel confused about a decision, sit quietly and ask your heart what feels honest and kind.

iti kṣhetraṁ tathā jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ choktaṁ samāsataḥ
mad-bhakta etad vijñāya mad-bhāvāyopapadyate

So I have briefly told you the field, knowledge and what is to be known. My devotee who understands this becomes fit to reach my state.

What Krishna meant

Krishna sums up: he has briefly explained the field, knowledge and what is to be known. A devotee who understands this becomes ready to reach him. The point is to learn and then apply. Choose one idea from this chapter, like "I am more than my body", and keep it in mind today.

prakṛitiṁ puruṣhaṁ chaiva viddhy anādī ubhāv api
vikārānśh cha guṇānśh chaiva viddhi prakṛiti-sambhavān

Know that both nature and the person have no beginning. Know also that all changes and the three qualities come from nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that nature and the person within it both have no beginning, and that all changes and the three qualities come from nature. Krishna means the world keeps changing by its own rules. Do not take every change personally, whether a job shift or a mood.

kārya-kāraṇa-kartṛitve hetuḥ prakṛitir uchyate
puruṣhaḥ sukha-duḥkhānāṁ bhoktṛitve hetur uchyate

Nature is said to be the cause of action and its tools. The person is said to be the cause of experiencing pleasure and pain.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says nature is the cause of action and its tools, while the person is the one who experiences pleasure and pain. So the body and mind do the work, and the inner self feels the results. When you are stressed, step back and notice, "I am feeling stress", instead of "I am stress".

puruṣhaḥ prakṛiti-stho hi bhuṅkte prakṛiti-jān guṇān
kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo ’sya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu

The person living in nature enjoys the qualities born from nature. Attachment to these qualities is the reason for birth in good and bad wombs.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the person who lives within nature enjoys the qualities born of nature, and attachment to them leads to good and bad births. Krishna means that clinging pulls us along. If you notice you cannot stop checking your phone or craving sweets, try holding back for a little while.

upadraṣhṭānumantā cha bhartā bhoktā maheśhvaraḥ
paramātmeti chāpy ukto dehe ’smin puruṣhaḥ paraḥ

The Supreme Person in this body is the witness, the one who permits, supports and enjoys, the great Lord, also called the Supreme Self.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the Supreme Self in the body is the witness: the one who watches, allows, supports and experiences. It stays close to us, quietly watching. If you are angry, imagine stepping back and watching yourself like a kind friend would. That small gap helps you choose better.

One who truly knows the Person, nature and the qualities, no matter how he lives now, is not born again.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says anyone who truly understands the person, nature and the qualities is freed, no matter how they are living now. This is a hopeful message: your past or present does not block you. Whatever your situation, you can begin learning and changing today.

dhyānenātmani paśhyanti kechid ātmānam ātmanā
anye sānkhyena yogena karma-yogena chāpare

Some see the Self in themselves by meditation, others by knowledge, and others by the path of action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says people find the Self in different ways. Some meditate, some use knowledge, and some use the path of action. There is no single right way for everyone. Find the way that suits you, whether quiet reflection, reading or helping others, and keep at it.

anye tv evam ajānantaḥ śhrutvānyebhya upāsate
te ’pi chātitaranty eva mṛityuṁ śhruti-parāyaṇāḥ

Others who do not know this, worship after hearing from others. They too cross over death, if they hold firmly to what they hear.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says some people do not know this directly, but listen to others and worship with faith. If they hold firmly to what they hear, they also cross over. You do not need to be a scholar. Following a good teaching sincerely, like a grandparent's advice, can truly guide you.

yāvat sañjāyate kiñchit sattvaṁ sthāvara-jaṅgamam
kṣhetra-kṣhetrajña-sanyogāt tad viddhi bharatarṣhabha

Whatever being is born, moving or unmoving, know that it comes from the joining of the field and the knower of the field.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says every being, moving or still, comes from the joining of the field and the knower of the field. So each living thing is a body together with awareness. Krishna means this should make us gentler. Next time you meet someone difficult, remember there is a person with feelings inside.

samaṁ sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu tiṣhṭhantaṁ parameśhvaram
vinaśhyatsv avinaśhyantaṁ yaḥ paśhyati sa paśhyati

One who sees the Supreme Lord equally present in all beings, not destroyed when they are destroyed, truly sees.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the one who truly sees is the person who sees the Supreme equally present in all beings, and who does not perish when bodies perish. Krishna means looking beyond outer differences. Try to greet the shopkeeper, the driver and your boss with the same warm respect.

samaṁ paśhyan hi sarvatra samavasthitam īśhvaram
na hinasty ātmanātmānaṁ tato yāti parāṁ gatim

Seeing the same Lord everywhere, one does not hurt oneself by oneself, and so reaches the highest goal.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when you see the same Lord everywhere, you do not hurt yourself by hurting others, and so reach the highest goal. Harming others also harms us in the end. Before saying something cruel to someone, picture it being said to you.

prakṛityaiva cha karmāṇi kriyamāṇāni sarvaśhaḥ
yaḥ paśhyati tathātmānam akartāraṁ sa paśhyati

One who sees that all actions are done only by nature, and that the Self is not the doer, truly sees.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the one who truly sees understands that all actions are done by nature, and that the Self is not the doer. Krishna means we are not as in control as we think, so pride is silly. After a success, thank the people and luck that helped. After a failure, be gentle with yourself.

yadā bhūta-pṛithag-bhāvam eka-stham anupaśhyati
tata eva cha vistāraṁ brahma sampadyate tadā

When one sees all the separate beings as resting in one, and spreading out from that one, then one becomes Brahman.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when a person sees all the separate beings as resting in one, and spreading out from that one, they become one with Brahman. Krishna means we are all connected, like branches of a single tree. In a family fight, remember you are on the same team.

anāditvān nirguṇatvāt paramātmāyam avyayaḥ
śharīra-stho ’pi kaunteya na karoti na lipyate

Because it has no beginning and no qualities, this Supreme Self does not change. Though it is in the body, Arjuna, it neither acts nor gets stained.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the Supreme Self has no beginning and does not change. Although it lives in the body, it does not act and does not get stained. Krishna means the deepest part of you stays pure, even when you make mistakes. Own your mistake, learn, and forgive yourself.

yathā sarva-gataṁ saukṣhmyād ākāśhaṁ nopalipyate
sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate

As space, which is everywhere, is not stained because it is so subtle, so the Self, present in every body, is not stained.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives an example: space is everywhere but is not stained, because it is so subtle. In the same way, the Self in every body is never stained. Krishna means that dirt around you need not stick to your heart. You can work in a messy place and still keep your own calm and goodness.

yathā prakāśhayaty ekaḥ kṛitsnaṁ lokam imaṁ raviḥ
kṣhetraṁ kṣhetrī tathā kṛitsnaṁ prakāśhayati bhārata

As one sun lights up this whole world, so the owner of the field lights up the whole field, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives another example: as one sun lights up the whole world, the owner of the field lights up the whole field with awareness. Krishna means your awareness shines on everything you do and feel. Use it, and pause to notice what is happening inside you before you react.

kṣhetra-kṣhetrajñayor evam antaraṁ jñāna-chakṣhuṣhā
bhūta-prakṛiti-mokṣhaṁ cha ye vidur yānti te param

Those who see with the eye of knowledge the difference between the field and its knower, and how beings are freed from nature, reach the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter: those who see with the eye of knowledge the difference between the field and its knower reach the Supreme. Krishna means to learn to tell what changes (body, moods) from what watches. In a hard time, remind yourself: my feelings will pass, and I will remain.
