Chapter 18 of 18 · 78 verses

Freedom Through Surrender

The last chapter brings everything together. Do your own duty, without clinging to the result. Your work, done well and offered to the divine, becomes your path. Krishna's final words: leave all worry, take refuge in him, and do not grieve. Arjuna says his confusion is gone and he is ready to act.

arjuna uvācha
sannyāsasya mahā-bāho tattvam ichchhāmi veditum
tyāgasya cha hṛiṣhīkeśha pṛithak keśhi-niṣhūdana

Arjuna asks: Mighty Krishna, I want to understand the truth of giving up (sannyasa) and of letting go (tyaga), and how they differ.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna to explain two things that sound alike: giving up actions, and letting go of the results. He wants the difference made clear. A good start is to ask this of your own life: should I quit this task, or just stop worrying about how it turns out?

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
kāmyānāṁ karmaṇāṁ nyāsaṁ sannyāsaṁ kavayo viduḥ
sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṁ prāhus tyāgaṁ vichakṣhaṇāḥ

Krishna says: The wise call giving up actions done out of desire "sannyasa." They call letting go of the fruit of all actions "tyaga."

What Krishna meant

Krishna says wise people use one word for dropping actions done out of desire, and another for letting go of the result of every action. The second is the more useful for daily life. Do your work fully, like preparing for an exam, and then calmly accept whatever result comes.

tyājyaṁ doṣha-vad ity eke karma prāhur manīṣhiṇaḥ
yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyam iti chāpare

Some wise people say actions should be dropped as they have faults. Others say acts of sacrifice, giving and discipline should not be dropped.

What Krishna meant

Krishna mentions that some thinkers say all action has faults and should be dropped, while others say acts like giving and discipline should stay. He is setting out both views before giving his own. Try the same habit when advice differs: hear both sides, then decide calmly.

niśhchayaṁ śhṛiṇu me tatra tyāge bharata-sattama
tyāgo hi puruṣha-vyāghra tri-vidhaḥ samprakīrtitaḥ

Hear my firm view on letting go, Arjuna. Letting go is said to be of three kinds.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says to Arjuna: listen to my firm view about letting go, which comes in three kinds. He wants Arjuna's full attention because the idea is important. When someone has something important to tell you, put the phone down and listen fully, as Arjuna is asked to do.

yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyaṁ kāryam eva tat
yajño dānaṁ tapaśh chaiva pāvanāni manīṣhiṇām

Acts of sacrifice, giving and discipline should not be given up. They should be done, for they purify the wise.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that good acts like giving, helping and self-discipline should not be dropped, because they make a person cleaner and wiser inside. So keep up your good habits, like helping at home or learning something new, even when you feel busy or lazy.

etāny api tu karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalāni cha
kartavyānīti me pārtha niśhchitaṁ matam uttamam

But even these should be done giving up attachment and the desire for results. This is my clear and best opinion, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna adds that even these good acts should be done without clinging and without craving the result. This is his clear opinion. For example, cook for your family because it is a loving thing to do, not to collect compliments. The work then feels lighter.

niyatasya tu sannyāsaḥ karmaṇo nopapadyate
mohāt tasya parityāgas tāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

Giving up a duty that one is meant to do is not right. Dropping it out of confusion is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says it is not right to give up the duties that are really yours, and that dropping them out of confusion is the dull way of letting go. If you leave your responsibilities because you feel lost, they pile up. First sort out your confusion, then decide.

duḥkham ity eva yat karma kāya-kleśha-bhayāt tyajet
sa kṛitvā rājasaṁ tyāgaṁ naiva tyāga-phalaṁ labhet

One who drops a duty just because it is painful or tiring does a passionate kind of letting go, and does not get the fruit of letting go.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that someone who drops a duty only because it is hard or tiring is acting from restlessness and will not gain from it. Everyone feels like quitting on tough days. Rest, ask for help, or break the task into steps, rather than abandoning it in one go.

kāryam ity eva yat karma niyataṁ kriyate ‘rjuna
saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ chaiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ

When a duty is done simply because it should be done, giving up attachment and the desire for results, that is called good letting go, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that doing a duty simply because it ought to be done, without clinging or craving the result, is the good kind of letting go. Think of a parent waking early for the school run: it is not exciting, but it is done with love, and that steady spirit is what he praises.

na dveṣhṭy akuśhalaṁ karma kuśhale nānuṣhajjate
tyāgī sattva-samāviṣhṭo medhāvī chhinna-sanśhayaḥ

A person of letting go, full of goodness, wise and free from doubt, neither hates an unpleasant task nor clings to a pleasant one.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a wise, calm person who has let go of results does not hate unpleasant tasks or cling to pleasant ones. At work this means facing a boring report with the same even mind as an exciting project. When you stop fighting the dull parts, they weigh less.

na hi deha-bhṛitā śhakyaṁ tyaktuṁ karmāṇy aśheṣhataḥ
yas tu karma-phala-tyāgī sa tyāgīty abhidhīyate

No one who has a body can give up actions completely. But one who lets go of the fruit of action is called a true renouncer.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says no one with a body can stop acting completely, so true letting go means giving up craving for the fruit, not giving up work. You cannot stop working, so the useful skill is staying calm about outcomes. Do your best on the presentation, then let the audience's reaction be what it is.

aniṣhṭam iṣhṭaṁ miśhraṁ cha tri-vidhaṁ karmaṇaḥ phalam
bhavaty atyāgināṁ pretya na tu sannyāsināṁ kvachit

The fruit of action after death is unwanted, wanted or mixed, for those who do not let go. But for those who renounce, never.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those who cling to results carry the weight of liked, disliked and mixed outcomes, while those who let go are free of it. When we tie our happiness to outcomes, every result becomes a burden. Working with a free mind spares you that burden.

pañchaitāni mahā-bāho kāraṇāni nibodha me
sānkhye kṛitānte proktāni siddhaye sarva-karmaṇām

Learn from me, mighty-armed, these five causes for the success of every action, as stated in the Sankhya teaching.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says: learn the five causes behind any action's success, as taught in the old Sankhya teaching. He is about to show that we are never the only cause of results. It is a relief to remember when you carry all the pressure on your own shoulders.

adhiṣhṭhānaṁ tathā kartā karaṇaṁ cha pṛithag-vidham
vividhāśh cha pṛithak cheṣhṭā daivaṁ chaivātra pañchamam

The place or body, the doer, the different tools, the many kinds of efforts, and fate as the fifth.

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists the five causes: the place or body, the doer, the tools, the many kinds of effort, and luck or fate. Example: a shop does well because of location, owner, equipment, hard work and some luck. Knowing this keeps you humble when you succeed and gentle with yourself when you do not.

śharīra-vāṅ-manobhir yat karma prārabhate naraḥ
nyāyyaṁ vā viparītaṁ vā pañchaite tasya hetavaḥ

Whatever action a person starts with body, speech or mind, right or wrong, these five are its causes.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that every action a person begins with body, speech or mind, whether right or wrong, rests on these same five causes. So no result is ever one person's doing alone. Even a small team project depends on many things, so thank the others involved.

tatraivaṁ sati kartāram ātmānaṁ kevalaṁ tu yaḥ
paśhyaty akṛita-buddhitvān na sa paśhyati durmatiḥ

That being so, whoever sees only themselves as the doer, with an unclear mind, does not see rightly.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that one who thinks of himself as the only doer does not see clearly. When something goes wrong, we blame ourselves completely, and when it goes well we take all the credit. Both are partial views. See your own effort fairly, and also see the other factors at play.

One whose mind is free from "I am the doer" and whose intellect is not stained does not kill, even though he strikes down these people, and is not bound.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person whose mind is free of the feeling 'I alone am the doer' is not bound by their actions, even in a hard duty like Arjuna's battle. The idea is to act on duty without ego and heavy guilt. A manager who must make a tough decision can do it fairly and calmly.

jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ parijñātā tri-vidhā karma-chodanā
karaṇaṁ karma karteti tri-vidhaḥ karma-saṅgrahaḥ

Knowledge, the object of knowledge and the knower are the three drivers of action. The tool, the act and the doer are the three parts of action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says action is driven by three things: knowledge, the thing known and the knower. It is carried out through three parts: the tool, the act and the doer. In simple terms, a good result needs understanding, the right method and a clear-headed person. When something fails, check which part needs fixing.

jñānaṁ karma cha kartā cha tridhaiva guṇa-bhedataḥ
prochyate guṇa-saṅkhyāne yathāvach chhṛiṇu tāny api

Knowledge, action and the doer are each of three kinds, according to the three qualities. Hear about them as they are.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that knowledge, action and the doer each come in three kinds, matching the three moods of the mind: calm, restless and dull. He will describe each in turn. As you hear them, notice which kind you mostly are, without judging yourself harshly.

sarva-bhūteṣhu yenaikaṁ bhāvam avyayam īkṣhate
avibhaktaṁ vibhakteṣhu taj jñānaṁ viddhi sāttvikam

The knowledge by which one sees one unchanging reality in all beings, undivided in the divided, know that to be good knowledge.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes good knowledge: seeing one same life in all beings, even though they look separate. In daily life this means remembering that the person in front of you, whoever they are, also wants to be happy and safe. It helps you speak to a rude shopkeeper or a nervous child with more patience.

pṛithaktvena tu yaj jñānaṁ nānā-bhāvān pṛithag-vidhān
vetti sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu taj jñānaṁ viddhi rājasam

The knowledge that sees different kinds of separate things in all beings as divided, know that to be passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that knowledge which sees only separate, different beings everywhere and nothing that connects them is the restless kind. It splits the world into us and them. When you notice that kind of thinking at work or among relatives, look for one thing you share with the other person.

yat tu kṛitsna-vad ekasmin kārye saktam ahaitukam
atattvārtha-vad alpaṁ cha tat tāmasam udāhṛitam

But the knowledge that clings to one small thing as if it were everything, without reason or truth, narrow, is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that knowledge which holds on to one small thing as if it were everything, with no reason behind it, is the dull kind. Judging a whole person from one mistake, or a whole job from one bad day, is like that. Widen the view before you decide.

niyataṁ saṅga-rahitam arāga-dveṣhataḥ kṛitam
aphala-prepsunā karma yat tat sāttvikam uchyate

An action that is a duty, done without attachment, without love or hate, and without wanting a reward, is called good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes good action: doing one's duty without clinging, without likes or dislikes, and without wanting a reward. For example, cleaning the house because it needs cleaning, not because you want praise or resent doing it. Such work feels calm because the mind is not bargaining.

yat tu kāmepsunā karma sāhankāreṇa vā punaḥ
kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ tad rājasam udāhṛitam

But action done by one wanting pleasures, with ego, and with great effort, is called passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that action driven by craving for pleasure, ego and heavy strain is the restless kind. Working yourself to the bone to prove you are the best leaves you tired and tense. Do your best, but let go of the need to prove something.

anubandhaṁ kṣhayaṁ hinsām anapekṣhya cha pauruṣham
mohād ārabhyate karma yat tat tāmasam uchyate

Action started out of confusion, without thinking about the result, the loss, the harm it may cause or one's own ability, is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that action begun in confusion, without thinking of the result, the loss, the harm or one's own ability, is the dull kind. Example: investing savings in a scheme without checking it. Take a little time to think before acting on big matters.

mukta-saṅgo ‘nahaṁ-vādī dhṛity-utsāha-samanvitaḥ
siddhy-asiddhyor nirvikāraḥ kartā sāttvika uchyate

A doer free from attachment, without pride, with firmness and enthusiasm, and unmoved by success or failure, is called good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes a good doer: free from clinging, not boastful, steady and keen, and not shaken by success or failure. Picture a calm team leader who stays cheerful when the sale falls through and does not gloat when it succeeds. That even steadiness is something to practise.

rāgī karma-phala-prepsur lubdho hinsātmako ‘śhuchiḥ
harṣha-śhokānvitaḥ kartā rājasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

A doer who is full of desire, wants the fruit of work, is greedy, harmful, impure and swings between joy and sorrow is called passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes a restless doer: full of craving, wanting the fruit, greedy, harsh to others, and swinging between joy and sorrow. If your mood rises and falls with every small result, that is the sign. Try to enjoy the work itself a little more, and the swings may soften.

ayuktaḥ prākṛitaḥ stabdhaḥ śhaṭho naiṣhkṛitiko ‘lasaḥ
viṣhādī dīrgha-sūtrī cha kartā tāmasa uchyate

A doer who is unfocused, vulgar, stubborn, deceitful, dishonest, lazy, gloomy and always delaying is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes a dull doer: unfocused, crude, stubborn, tricky, dishonest, lazy, gloomy and always putting things off. The one to watch for is delay. If a task keeps getting pushed to tomorrow, do just five minutes of it now, and the heavy feeling usually eases.

buddher bhedaṁ dhṛiteśh chaiva guṇatas tri-vidhaṁ śhṛiṇu
prochyamānam aśheṣheṇa pṛithaktvena dhanañjaya

Now hear fully, Arjuna, the three kinds of understanding and of steadiness, according to the qualities.

What Krishna meant

Krishna now tells Arjuna to listen to the three kinds of understanding and of steadiness, one by one. Understanding helps you decide, steadiness helps you carry on. Both matter whether you are choosing a career or sticking with a hard exam preparation.

pravṛittiṁ cha nivṛittiṁ cha kāryākārye bhayābhaye
bandhaṁ mokṣhaṁ cha yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī

The understanding that knows when to act and when to stop, what to do and not do, what to fear and not fear, what binds and what frees, is good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes good understanding: knowing when to act and when to stop, what to do and avoid, what to fear and what not to, and what ties us down or frees us. Example: knowing when to speak up in a meeting and when to stay quiet. Clear judgment saves a lot of trouble.

yayā dharmam adharmaṁ cha kāryaṁ chākāryam eva cha
ayathāvat prajānāti buddhiḥ sā pārtha rājasī

The understanding that gets right and wrong, and what to do and not do, only partly right is passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that understanding that sees right and wrong only partly, and gets duty a little muddled, is the restless kind. This is normal when we are rushed or stressed. Before an important decision, take a breath, ask one more question and look at it again.

adharmaṁ dharmam iti yā manyate tamasāvṛitā
sarvārthān viparītānśh cha buddhiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī

The understanding that is covered by darkness, thinks wrong is right, and sees everything upside down is dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that understanding clouded by darkness, which takes wrong for right and sees everything upside down, is the dull kind. When we are very tired, hurt or angry, our thinking can turn upside down. Do not make big decisions in that state; rest first and decide when your mind is clear.

dhṛityā yayā dhārayate manaḥ-prāṇendriya-kriyāḥ
yogenāvyabhichāriṇyā dhṛitiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī

The steadiness by which one holds the activity of mind, breath and senses together with unwavering yoga is good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes good steadiness: holding mind, breath and senses together in focus. Example: sitting down to study and keeping your attention on the page without drifting to your phone. This sort of steady focus can be built with small daily practice.

yayā tu dharma-kāmārthān dhṛityā dhārayate ‘rjuna
prasaṅgena phalākāṅkṣhī dhṛitiḥ sā pārtha rājasī

The steadiness by which one holds on to duty, pleasure and wealth, wanting rewards from each, is passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the restless kind of steadiness holds on to duty, pleasure and wealth, but only for the rewards each gives. If you stick to a job only for the pay and perks, one disappointment shakes you. Finding some real meaning in what you do keeps you steady for longer.

yayā svapnaṁ bhayaṁ śhokaṁ viṣhādaṁ madam eva cha
na vimuñchati durmedhā dhṛitiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī

The steadiness by which a foolish person does not let go of sleep, fear, grief, gloom and pride is dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that dull steadiness is clinging to sleep, fear, grief, gloom and pride, without letting them go. Some sadness is natural, but dwelling on it for days helps no one. If you feel stuck, talk to someone you trust and take one small step out of the heaviness.

sukhaṁ tv idānīṁ tri-vidhaṁ śhṛiṇu me bharatarṣhabha
abhyāsād ramate yatra duḥkhāntaṁ cha nigachchhati
yat tad agre viṣham iva pariṇāme ‘mṛitopamam
tat sukhaṁ sāttvikaṁ proktam ātma-buddhi-prasāda-jam

Now hear about the three kinds of happiness, Arjuna. The one in which a person delights through practice and which brings an end to sorrow,

What Krishna meant

Krishna now introduces the three kinds of happiness. Everyone wants to be happy, but not all happiness is alike, and some leaves us worse off later. The first kind he describes comes through practice and brings an end to sorrow, so listen for how it differs from quick pleasures.

yat tad agre viṣam iva pariṇāme 'mṛtopamam tat sukhaṁ sāttvikaṁ proktam ātma-buddhi-prasāda-jam

which is like poison at first but like nectar at the end, and which comes from a clear mind and self-knowledge, is called good happiness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that good happiness feels bitter at first but turns sweet later, and comes from a clear mind. Example: getting up early to exercise or study is hard at the start, but gives lasting satisfaction. Choose small hard things that your future self will thank you for.

viṣhayendriya-sanyogād yat tad agre ’mṛitopamam
pariṇāme viṣham iva tat sukhaṁ rājasaṁ smṛitam

The happiness that comes from the senses meeting their objects, which is like nectar at first but like poison at the end, is called passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that restless happiness, from the senses meeting what they like, is sweet at first but bitter at the end. Scrolling for hours or overeating feels good for a moment and leaves you drained. Notice the after-effect, and choose the pleasures that leave you feeling better.

yad agre chānubandhe cha sukhaṁ mohanam ātmanaḥ
nidrālasya-pramādotthaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛitam

The happiness that confuses the self from beginning to end, and comes from sleep, laziness and carelessness, is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that dull happiness comes from sleep, laziness and carelessness, and confuses a person from start to finish. Spending a whole day doing nothing may feel restful, but it rarely refreshes. Real rest leaves you better; mere laziness leaves you dull, so tell them apart.

na tad asti pṛithivyāṁ vā divi deveṣhu vā punaḥ
sattvaṁ prakṛiti-jair muktaṁ yad ebhiḥ syāt tribhir guṇaiḥ

There is no being on earth, or among the gods in heaven, that is free from these three qualities born of nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that every being in the world is touched by the three moods of nature: calm, restless and dull, and none is free from them. So it is normal to feel all three on different days. Instead of blaming yourself for a lazy or restless day, notice it and gently guide yourself back.

brāhmaṇa-kṣhatriya-viśhāṁ śhūdrāṇāṁ cha parantapa
karmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāva-prabhavair guṇaiḥ

The duties of teachers, rulers, traders and workers have been divided, Arjuna, according to the qualities born of their own nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the work of teachers, leaders, traders and workers is set according to people's natures. Read kindly, it means that society needs every kind of honest work, and each person does best in work that suits their own talents. Every honest job deserves equal respect.

śhamo damas tapaḥ śhauchaṁ kṣhāntir ārjavam eva cha
jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam

Calm, self-control, discipline, purity, patience, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and faith are the natural duties of a teacher.

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists qualities that help those whose work is teaching and guiding: calm, self-control, patience, honesty, knowledge and faith. These suit anyone who guides others, like a good teacher or a parent. Be calm and honest when you explain something to a child or a junior colleague.

śhauryaṁ tejo dhṛitir dākṣhyaṁ yuddhe chāpy apalāyanam
dānam īśhvara-bhāvaśh cha kṣhātraṁ karma svabhāva-jam

Courage, strength, steadiness, skill, not running from battle, generosity and leadership are the natural duties of a ruler.

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists qualities that help those who lead and protect: courage, strength, steadiness, skill, not running from a hard fight, generosity and leadership. A good leader at work shows these qualities too, by staying firm in a crisis and being fair to the team.

kṛiṣhi-gau-rakṣhya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśhya-karma svabhāva-jam
paricharyātmakaṁ karma śhūdrasyāpi svabhāva-jam

Farming, protecting cows and trade are the natural duties of a trader. Service is the natural duty of a worker.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that farming, trade and honest service are all natural kinds of work, each valuable. Without farmers, traders and helpers, nobody eats or gets what they need. Every honest job keeps the world going, so do your own work with pride and thank others for theirs.

sve sve karmaṇy abhirataḥ sansiddhiṁ labhate naraḥ
sva-karma-nirataḥ siddhiṁ yathā vindati tach chhṛiṇu

A person finds perfection by being devoted to their own work. Hear how one finds perfection by doing one's own work.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person reaches their best by devoting themselves to their own work, and he promises to explain how. Taking pride and care in what you do, whether you cook, drive, teach or code, is itself a path to a good life.

yataḥ pravṛittir bhūtānāṁ yena sarvam idaṁ tatam
sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarchya siddhiṁ vindati mānavaḥ

By worshipping through one's own work the One from whom all beings arise and by whom all this is filled, a person finds perfection.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when you offer your daily work as a kind of worship of the One who is behind all beings, you find fulfilment. In plain terms, do your work with care and an honest heart, as a gift to others. A shopkeeper who treats each customer fairly is doing exactly this.

śhreyān swa-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣhṭhitāt
svabhāva-niyataṁ karma kurvan nāpnoti kilbiṣham

Your own duty, even if imperfect, is better than another's duty done well. By doing the work set by your own nature, you do not incur sin.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that it is better to do your own work, even imperfectly, than someone else's work perfectly. It does not mean avoiding growth. It means do not envy others' lives. If you are not a great singer but a fine cook, shine in your own kitchen without comparing yourself to others.

saha-jaṁ karma kaunteya sa-doṣham api na tyajet
sarvārambhā hi doṣheṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛitāḥ

One should not give up one's natural duty, even if it has faults, Arjuna. All undertakings are covered by faults, as fire is by smoke.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one should not drop work that is naturally one's own just because it has flaws, since every undertaking has flaws, as fire has smoke. No job is perfect. Instead of quitting at the first irritation, see what is good in it and work on what can be improved.

asakta-buddhiḥ sarvatra jitātmā vigata-spṛihaḥ
naiṣhkarmya-siddhiṁ paramāṁ sannyāsenādhigachchhati

One whose mind is not attached anywhere, who has mastered the self and is free of desire, reaches by renunciation the highest freedom from action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that someone whose mind is not hooked on anything, who has mastered themselves and lost craving, reaches true freedom from the pull of work. It is the calm of working without clinging. A person who works hard without constantly worrying about gain feels peaceful.

siddhiṁ prāpto yathā brahma tathāpnoti nibodha me
samāsenaiva kaunteya niṣhṭhā jñānasya yā parā

Hear from me briefly, Arjuna, how one who has reached perfection reaches Brahman, the highest state of knowledge.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says: now hear briefly how one who has reached this perfection comes to the highest knowledge. He is about to give a short summary of the inner path. Think of it as a quick guide, to be read slowly and tried one point at a time.

buddhyā viśhuddhayā yukto dhṛityātmānaṁ niyamya cha
śhabdādīn viṣhayāns tyaktvā rāga-dveṣhau vyudasya cha

With a pure mind, steadying the self with firmness, giving up sound and other sense objects, and putting aside love and hate,

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists the start of this inner path: a clean mind, firm self-control, stepping back from the noise of the senses, and setting aside love and hate. In practice, try keeping likes and dislikes from deciding every move. You might eat what is healthy even when something else tempts you.

living in a quiet place, eating lightly, controlling body, speech and mind, always devoted to meditation and holding on to detachment,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues: spend time in quiet, eat lightly, control body, speech and mind, practise meditation and keep a calm detachment. These are simple habits: some quiet time daily, moderate eating and thoughtful speech. They help a stressed, busy person feel steadier.

ahankāraṁ balaṁ darpaṁ kāmaṁ krodhaṁ parigraham
vimuchya nirmamaḥ śhānto brahma-bhūyāya kalpate

giving up ego, force, pride, desire, anger and possessiveness, free from "mine" and at peace, one becomes fit to be one with Brahman.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says: let go of ego, force, pride, desire, anger and the feeling of 'this is mine', and become peaceful, ready to realise the highest truth. Letting go of possessiveness is hard but freeing. Try to hold your belongings and even your opinions a little more lightly.

brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śhochati na kāṅkṣhati
samaḥ sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu mad-bhaktiṁ labhate parām

One who is one with Brahman, cheerful in mind, neither grieves nor craves, and is equal to all beings, gains supreme devotion to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that one who has reached this peace is cheerful, neither grieves nor craves, treats all beings alike and grows in deep devotion to him. Imagine someone who stays kind to everyone and does not get upset by small losses. Such peace is a gift that can grow with practice.

bhaktyā mām abhijānāti yāvān yaśh chāsmi tattvataḥ
tato māṁ tattvato jñātvā viśhate tad-anantaram

Through devotion he knows me truly, as I am and what I am. Then, knowing me in truth, he enters into me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that through devotion a person comes to know him as he truly is, and in knowing him truly, merges into him. In simple terms, love and sincere trust open the door to deeper understanding where only reasoning cannot. Like a friendship, it grows through time spent with sincerity.

sarva-karmāṇy api sadā kurvāṇo mad-vyapāśhrayaḥ
mat-prasādād avāpnoti śhāśhvataṁ padam avyayam

Even while always doing all kinds of work, one who takes shelter in me reaches, by my grace, the eternal and unchanging place.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that even while doing all kinds of work, one who takes refuge in him reaches the eternal home. The message is that you need not leave your job or family to live a spiritual life. You can stay busy with daily work and still keep your heart steady and trusting.

18.57

chetasā sarva-karmāṇi mayi sannyasya mat-paraḥ
buddhi-yogam upāśhritya mach-chittaḥ satataṁ bhava

Giving all your actions to me in your mind, holding me as your highest goal, and relying on the yoga of wisdom, keep your mind always on me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna to offer all his actions to him in his mind, hold him as the highest goal and keep his mind on him with wise understanding. Practically, start a task with a quiet thought like 'I will do this well and honestly', and finish it with the same calm.

mach-chittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣhyasi
atha chet tvam ahankārān na śhroṣhyasi vinaṅkṣhyasi

With your mind on me, you will cross all difficulties by my grace. But if you do not listen out of ego, you will be lost.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that with his mind on him, he will cross every difficulty, but if pride makes him ignore this advice, he will lose his way. The kind lesson: when you are stuck, listen to good advice rather than insisting on your own way. Humility makes problems easier to cross.

yad ahankāram āśhritya na yotsya iti manyase
mithyaiṣha vyavasāyas te prakṛitis tvāṁ niyokṣhyati

If, relying on ego, you think "I will not fight," your decision is false. Your own nature will push you into action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that if Arjuna, out of pride, thinks 'I will not fight', that decision is mistaken, because his own nature will push him into action. Decisions made from ego often do not hold. Before saying 'I quit' in a heated moment, ask whether it is truly you or just your pride speaking.

18.60

kartuṁ nechchhasi yan mohāt kariṣhyasy avaśho ’pi tat

Bound by your own work born of your own nature, Arjuna, what you do not wish to do out of confusion, you will do even against your will.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that Arjuna is bound by his own nature, and what he refuses to do out of confusion, he will end up doing anyway. Our natural strengths keep calling us. A person born to teach will find their way back to teaching. Notice what you are drawn to and give it honest effort.

īśhvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛid-deśhe ‘rjuna tiṣhṭhati
bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā

The Lord lives in the heart of all beings, Arjuna, turning all beings, as if mounted on a machine, by his power.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the divine presence lives in the heart of every being and moves everyone, as though they were on a machine. It is a way of saying we are not alone in what we do. When you feel overwhelmed, remember that you are part of something bigger and can ask for guidance within.

18.62

tam eva śharaṇaṁ gachchha sarva-bhāvena bhārata

Go to him alone for refuge with your whole being, Arjuna. By his grace you will find supreme peace and the eternal home.

What Krishna meant

Krishna advises Arjuna to take refuge in that presence with his whole being, and says this brings deep peace and an eternal home. In daily life, this means giving worries over in trust, through quiet prayer or reflection. Many people find that doing so lets them think more clearly.

18.63

iti te jñānam ākhyātaṁ guhyād guhyataraṁ mayā

So I have told you this knowledge, more secret than any secret. Think about it fully, and then do as you wish.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he has now shared the deepest knowledge, and tells Arjuna to think it over fully and then do as he wishes. He does not force Arjuna. A good guide gives advice and leaves the choice to you. Take time before a big decision, and listen to your own heart as well.

18.64

Hear again my highest word, the deepest secret of all. You are very dear to me, so I will tell you what is good for you.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says to Arjuna: hear my highest word once more, the deepest secret of all. He says it because Arjuna is dear to him and he wants what is good for him. It is how a loving friend speaks: with care for your well-being, and with no wish to control you.

18.65

man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru

Keep your mind on me, be devoted to me, worship me, bow to me. You will come to me. This is my promise to you, for you are dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says: keep your mind on me, be devoted, bow to me, and you will reach me. This is my promise, because you are dear to me. It is a loving invitation to trust. In a hard time, turning your heart toward what you believe in can bring comfort and steadiness.

18.66

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śharaṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣhayiṣhyāmi mā śhuchaḥ

Let go of all other paths and come to me alone for refuge. I will free you from all wrong. Do not grieve.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says: let go of all other paths and come to me alone for refuge, do not grieve, I will free you from wrong. This is among his most comforting words. When you feel crushed by guilt or worry, it says to put the weight down, trust, and begin again.

This should never be told to one who does not practise discipline, who has no devotion, who does not want to listen, or who speaks ill of me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says this teaching should not be pressed on someone who has no discipline, no devotion, no wish to listen, or who speaks ill of him. Wisdom cannot be forced on anyone. Share what helps you with those who are open, and be patient with those who are not ready.

18.68

ya idaṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ mad-bhakteṣhv abhidhāsyati
bhaktiṁ mayi parāṁ kṛitvā mām evaiṣhyaty asanśhayaḥ

One who teaches this deepest secret to my devotees, with the highest devotion to me, will come to me without doubt.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that one who shares this deepest teaching with others who love him, out of deep devotion, does a great service. We can all pass good ideas along kindly. Teaching a friend or your child something wise you have learned is a small way of doing the same.

na cha tasmān manuṣhyeṣhu kaśhchin me priya-kṛittamaḥ
bhavitā na cha me tasmād anyaḥ priyataro bhuvi

No one among people does more dear service to me than such a person, and no one on earth will be dearer to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that no one does a service more dear to him than a person who shares this wisdom, and no one will be dearer to him. Helping others to understand and grow is seen as one of the best things a person can do. For example, mentoring a young colleague is such a service.

18.70

And whoever studies this sacred conversation between us, by that sacrifice of knowledge I would be worshipped. This is my view.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that anyone who studies this sacred talk between him and Arjuna honours him through the offering of knowledge. Reading and reflecting on good ideas is itself a gift to your own mind. Even ten quiet minutes a day with a verse can give you something to think about.

18.71

śhraddhāvān anasūyaśh cha śhṛiṇuyād api yo naraḥ
so ‘pi muktaḥ śhubhāl lokān prāpnuyāt puṇya-karmaṇām

Even one who only listens with faith and without finding fault will be freed and reach the happy worlds of those with good deeds.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that even one who only listens with faith, without finding fault, will be freed from wrong and reach good places. The message is that open-minded listening alone is valuable. Hear an idea out fully before arguing against it, and notice how much more you learn.

kachchid etach chhrutaṁ pārtha tvayaikāgreṇa chetasā
kachchid ajñāna-sammohaḥ pranaṣhṭas te dhanañjaya

Have you heard this, Arjuna, with a focused mind? Has the confusion born of ignorance been destroyed?

What Krishna meant

Krishna asks Arjuna if he has listened with a focused mind, and if his confusion from ignorance is gone. It is a gentle check, like a teacher asking if the lesson is clear. You can ask yourself at the end of a hard conversation or day: do I see more clearly now?

18.73

arjuna uvācha

Arjuna says: My confusion is gone, Krishna. By your grace I have found my clarity. I stand firm, free from doubt. I will do as you say.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna answers: my confusion is gone, I have found my clarity through your grace, I stand firm and free of doubt, and I will do as you say. He is ready to act. Clarity does not remove difficulty, but it lets us act with a steady mind, and that is a win.

yatra yogeśhvaraḥ kṛiṣhṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ
